In Watermelon Sugar

Everyone knew about her thing for babies. How living things in miniature form made her stomach dance and her pupils dilate and her voice rise an octave. He, more than anyone, knew how to recognize the symptoms.
The first thing he noticed when she came bounding toward him was the glint in her eyes. Then came the voice.
"Look", she cooed with her hand outstretched, "a baby watermelon".

"Cool…how does it taste?"
"I don't know. Let's find out."

"Here", she said, offering him the small hemisphere "…you first."
"What about the skin?"
"It's OK…it's edible."
"…and the seeds?"
"Those too."

She watched the unraveling through his eyes. The synaptic storm that waged behind them. She put a hand to her mouth to cover her smile as his face contorted. 
"Well?"
"Uhm…it's not watermelon."
"What then…?"
"Not sure…something familiar…not watermelon."
"Does it taste of summer? and sunshine? and fruit ripened on the vine?"
"Yes…all of those things…but not watermelon."

  1. It really seems as thought the new trend in pastry and even hot kitchen is that of a sort of realism. Really cool stuff. I’m inundated with green zebras and I still couldn’t ( actually still can’t) grasp how that’s not a real baby watermelon

  4. I’ve been a silent reader for awhile, but I just had to tell you that this is the cleverest food-related thing I’ve seen in a long time. Absolutely brilliant. I would love to see people’s reactions when they bite into one of these.

  13. Those are adorable. At first I thought they might be Marzipan or something similar and then you had me going for a minute that they might be really watermelon. Seriously though …I think you have too much time on your hands. I think you need to come to my house I could use some help with dishes!

  14. elarael – i believe some artistic license was taken on the photos. the first two shots are in fact just tomatoes, and only the finished halved product has the aspic inside.

  35. I thought this was the real thing. I saw an article on AOL that they were starting to cultivate bite-sized watermelons that you can eat whole that taste sort of melony but arent really melons. No Joke, I saw it about a month ago, and that they were an import and they were going to test them here in the US in New York.

  43. I haven’t thought about “In Watermelon Sugar” for decades. Literally. It’s one of those “hippie” books I read and wrote a term paper on way back when.
    Nevertheless, I LOVE your cute little watermelons. How about a shot in that tomato juice, just to give the whole thing a kick. Too fun.
